We are studying Basic principles of the Bible using The Basics as a guide.

5/28/16:

Today we looked at the Holy Spirit’s function in the lives of the Christian. With a focus on John 7:37-39, John 14:16-31, John 15:26-27, and John 16:7-14

5/15/16:

Today we looked at the provision for that redemption- the cross and who Jesus was and the salvation we have through His death and resurrection.

5/8/16:

Today we looked at God’s plan of redemption in Romans 8:28-30.

5/1/16:

We are starting a study of the Basics of Christianity. Today we will study the problem of Sin. We will focus on Genesis 2:16-17, and Genesis 3:1-21.

4/10/16:

Matthew 28:1-15, Mark 16:1-13, Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-18. We discussed how the variations in the accounts can be reconciled. The application to our lives was that the first people to see resurrected Jesus were the women who were seeking Him. The more we seek Him the more we will “see” Him in our lives. Also, the change evident in the disciples’ lives is evidence that the resurrection was real, which leads to the question: do people see that change in our lives?

3/20/16:

Luke 19:28-39 and Luke 22:14-23. We discussed the meaning behind the events of Palm Sunday and  the meaning behind communion, as well as what the “new covenant” is.

2/7/16:

Reading for Sunday: Genesis 6:1-8:19

1/31/16:

Reading: 1 John 1:1- 2:3, Luke 15:11-32. Confessing we are a sinner in need of a savior is necessary for eternal life. Confession after we are saved is to restore us to a good relationship with Christ (fellowship). Confession after salvation should be accompanied by correction if we are to function in that fellowship. In other words, if we can’t be choosing to sin and take part in God’s work and fellowship at the same time

1/24/16:

Reading: Matthew 7:1-5, Romans 2. We discussed not being hypocritical as Christians, as well as the importance of having a humble attitude towards others. We also discussed the following good Bible study practices: 1) Therefore, what’s it there for? Look at the prior content when we see the word “therefore,” 2) The Bible explains itself, and 3) Take the Bible in context.

1/17/16:

We discussed how David defeated Goliath through faith by resting from his own power and trusting in God’s power. We discussed how we can have faith in our own lives.

1/3/16:

Reading: Exodus 16:1-20, Numbers 13:1-14:10. We discussed how the Israelites failed to enter the promised land because they trusted in their own works instead of God’s power. We applied this to Hebrews 3 and 4 and how we should be resting in our works and trusting God’s power. The manna from Exodus is a picture of taking in God’s word.

12/27/15:

Reading: Exodus 12-14, Genesis 3:1-7, 21. We discussed how the Passover points to Jesus, the Lamb of God and discussed ways in which the Israelites journey to the promised land is a picture of our spiritual life. The Israelites being saved from slavery in Egypt and then saved from the Egyptians again at the Red Sea started a discussion about how we are saved from not only the penalty of sin but also the power of sin in our daily lives.

Reading: Matthew 1-2, Luke 1-2.

Summary: God used a variety of different types of people in the birth of Christ. He uses a variety of people today. There are opportunities for God to use us in our everyday lives. Just as the shepherds didn’t delay in following God’s directions, we shouldn’t delay in following God’s directions.

Reading: Exodus 7-11, Psalm 37:4, and John 12:35-43.

Summary: Pharoah chose to harden his own heart. In what ways do we harden our own heart? Do we choose to set our heart on Christ or on modern “idols”?

Reading: Ephesians 6.

Summary: The armor of God. Why we need it. Recognizing the resources Christ has for us by conquering the cross. Breakdown 6pcs of the Armor

11/15/15 :

Reading: Ephesians 6.

Summary: The armor of God. How to prepare ourselves to wear it and why we need it (angelic conflict and knowing the enemy). Know and realize everyday is a battle and we are engage. Know our enemy, how they operate and what they stand for.-What should our attitude be leading up to and during the battle.

Reading: The book of Ruth.

Summary: Being a godly women by emulating the characteristics of Ruth. We also discussed being modest for ourselves, future husbands, and to not to be a stumbling block to others

11/1/15:

Reading: Exodus2:11-14 Moses kills the Egyptian, Exodus 3 and 4, God calls Moses. 1 Corinthians 12

Summary: How do we respond when calls us? We must rely on God’s power instead of our own. God has a unique job for each believer (spiritual gifts)
